Local fish farming practices and a typology of farms based on organic matter intake management

Résumé

This chapter presents the results of a study founded on analysing the production systems that consisted of collecting all the information relating to current practices (zootechnical procedures, pond fertilization and fish feeding) and constraints encountered by producers (sanitary and socioeconomic techniques) through a bibliographical study and field surveys and building up a typology in relation to the potential use of animal effluents in fish feed. The main characteristics of fish farming, major constraints concerning pond water management, diet and trophic intakes and effluent management are discussed.
